song: Persian Rug
artist: Julian Lage
album: Arclight (2016)
writers: Music by Neil Morét / Lyrics by Gus Kahn (1927)

electric guitar: Julian Lage
double bass: Scott Colley
(drums, vibraphone: Kenny Wollesen)

This tune by Kahn & Morét is a rarely heard jazz standard and a refreshing pick for this album, released these 89 years later. Gus Kahn was an American lyricist and contributor to Broadway and movie scores in the 1920ies and 30ies. Neil Morét was an American composer of the novelty piano-era during the 1910s and 20ies. Also, check out this fine blog post by Ehsan Khoshbakhy, which contextualizes the origin of the tune, sums up its paradigmatic recordings, and discusses the now aged lyric that "reads like Edward Said's Orientalism set to swing".
