This is a detailed transcription of the first 2020 performance of ”Etude”, then titled “Guitar Étude #6”, which was published on the Instagram channel of the guitar string company D’Addario and Company (link above). This was later performed at the National Sawdust 2020 online concert (website / YouTube). This 6th etude is the first published since his five-part YouTube mini-series.
While Julian Lage himself posted his own sheet music here, my product is instead a detailed transcription of how he actually executed it on the fretboard, including tabs, finger notations, chords, etc. Enjoy!
“ [It] is a bit of a study: This is part of a series of etudes that I started years ago. I wrote about four of these and then they lay dormant for years. At a certain point, John Zorn – the master, my mentor, and dear, dear partner in crime – he asked me to be part of a series that was going on at National Sawdust. (…) John Zorn led a series of different players playing new music that they had written for it. And my focus this time around was to do something I was afraid of, which was to pick up the Etude series again and push forward with it. And, to my delight, it was awesome and fun and wonderful, and I am glad I accepted the challenge. This is the latest edition of that (…). It is simply called, Etude No. 6.”
