“ For this particular record, there were two things that were important: One was that it was a band that was almost a special-edition version of ours. (…) We wanted something that was just like: ‘What would be fun to go into for a weekend and do, this thing we won’t ever get to do usually?’. The other thing was that we wanted to do covers. We wanted to do more left-leaning versions of covers, meaning more avant-garde, more improvised-based. (…) So, we went to The Loft, because we had mixed our previous record Modern Lore there (…) And, we wanted to see what it would be like to track. So we made a record of total jazz-style day-and-a-half tracking; mixed it immediately; done! And I am thrilled with that! ”

“ For the most part, our approach is taking songs that we like to listen to, that seemingly have a good format or a good structure for the band to play. And what I mean by that is: We are looking for songs that are not too complicated or too overly structured, so that there is room for us to improvise – even if we don’t take a solo, per se – room for additions – harmonically, rhythmically, phrasing-wise. Also, from the [‘Love Hurts’] record, most of the songs are usually from people who are kind of unusual, who play melodic music, but also play the improvised or more avant-garde music, like Ornette Coleman or Keith Jarrett. (…) That music usually seems to celebrate the balance of songs with communication and improvisation. It is definitely something that we study from the masters, and then we do our own version of it. I think, it is important to me that the band, first and foremost, can talk to one another musically. ”
